This week we have been busy finishing up our PBL "What's the past got to do with it". We have published our group books and they will be displayed Monday in the hall, please come by and check them out! In addition to wrapping up our project, we took a trip to the manor to craft some snowmen with the residents. It was so much fun! Below are some pictures from our visit. Many students decided to leave their snowman with a resident to help decorate the manor. It has been truly touching to see the relationships that have developed between all the first grade classes and the Queen Anne Manor residents. We will be presenting our quilt illustrating our time at the Manor this Friday, December 14th at 1:00 pm. This visit is open to all families who would like to come. We will have five to six students from each class share their experience, all three first grades will sing a song and then we will have a cookie snack to share with the residents. If you would like to come, we will leave the school at 12:45 and will walk over to the Manor. We will probably return around 1:45. After we return to the school, we will be sharing our videos that the students filmed from our visit. The videos are all on the internal server at the school and if you can't make it to our celebration, please feel free to watch them another time at school. Here are some photos from our recent visit: Thank you for your support and hope to see you this Friday at the Queen Anne Manor!

Hello Families!
I hope you had a great relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. It was great to be able to meet and talk with you about your child's progress during conference week. These next four weeks are going to fly by with activities. We are wrapping up our project " What's the past got to do it?" this week with our visit to Queen Anne Manor. If you would like to volunteer please check out our volunteer spot. We will continue to visit Queen Anne Manor throughout the year, though instead of weekly visits, we will just go once monthly. I will let you know when I receive confirmation for our December visit. Students have been working hard on writing and publishing their work. We have been working on writing small moment stories, short stories from our lives. After student work has been scanned, it is posted in the hall in student folders. Please feel free to stop by and check out our writing. Finally, many students have been bringing their reading envelope back daily and exchanging books more than once a week. Instead of sending back the folders on Friday, I would like to move to a new system with students bringing back the envelope as much as needed throughout the week. I will do my best to make sure that the envelopes come home nightly. Wow, what a week! All week excitement mounted for Halloween. When Wednesday rolled around, I was worried we were in store for a hectic day. Thanks to our wonderful party planners and volunteers our day was perfect! Students got to complete a spider craft, color a cool skull picture, listen to a Halloween story complete with props and decorate Halloween cookies. The rain put a damper on our parade, we moved our parade to the play court and it was a blast! Thank you to everyone who sent treats or volunteered in the classroom. We had several photographers to document the day, when photos become available, I will let the class know.
This week we will be heading to the Queen Anne Manor to video tape our conversations with the residents. We have been practicing interviewing and recording each other with flip cameras in the past few weeks. Finally, conferences are coming up. If you have not yet signed up, please email me so we can schedule a time. I will be sending out confirmations of conference times later this week. Hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend, I know there was a lot of excitement Thursday from the students about having three days off! Although, this was a shorter week, we were incredibly busy in first grade. We finished our fall MAP testing and began Roots of Empathy. The class is very excited to meet our class baby Austin, on Wednesday, October 17th. We have a Roots of Empathy board up in front of the class with Austin’s picture, feel free to come by and check it out.
We will be visiting the Manor again this week and we have begun to prepare questions to ask the residents about their lives. We spent a lot of time talking about our grandparents and how their lives might have been different than ours. The students are very excited to go and visit the Manor again. We will be going on Tuesday, October 16th at 1:00. Since it seems the rain has returned, please make sure to send appropriate rain clothing for our walk. Upcoming events this week: Visit to Queen Anne Manor, October 16th at 1:00 Roots of Empathy baby visit, October 17th at 9:45 Thank you, Ms. Smith Thank for you coming out to curriculum night! It was great to be able to see you all again and share what our year is going to look like in first grade. I feel incredibly lucky to be teaching such a kind group of students who have such involved families. Thank you. In this week’s post, I am going to touch on a couple of points that were brought up at curriculum night, if you have further questions, please feel free to contact me. Birthday Celebrations for Summer Birthdays After some consideration, I have decided for students whose birthdays fall during vacation times, it would be easiest for us to celebrate and honor their birthday by doing a half birthday celebration in the class. This will follow the same format as the school year birthdays. If you would like to have your child’s birthday celebrated, please send a new or used book to share on the day and then it will be placed in our birthday book bin in our library. We will sing to the student and he/she will get to wear a special crown for the day.
