Thank you for the amazing teacher appreciation and birthday gifts last week, what a fun way to spend a week!
We have made it to the point in the year when everything seems to speed up. This week will be no exception. On Tuesday, we will go to the Manor to play bingo with the residents. It should be a lot of fun!
On Thursday, we will have Young Author’s Day, we will participate in activities throughout the day including visits from authors and sharing our own writing.
As school wraps up, I have been doing end of the year assessments to gauge student learning. This week, we focused heavily on math addition and subtraction facts. Many students are able to do addition and subtraction facts with supports like using fingers or counting up, however, the goal for the end of first grade is to be able to automatically add and subtract to 20 fluently (without using a support skill). To help students develop this automaticity, I have flash card sets (A-H) for students to practice with. I sent many of these sets home this week, please practice these facts frequently until students can correctly work though the set with 100% accuracy. When they are ready, they should bring the set back and I can pass along the next set for them to work on at home.
On May 29th, the first grade will host a bird Symposium from 6:30-8:00 at school. This will be a chance for first grades to show off their bird knowledge and share the bird that they have chosen to become an expert on.
